Our guest editors have curated a collection of articles published in Insights over the last twelve years on the theme of repositories that reveals diverse perspectives. Their contrasting viewpoints, from scepticism about the compromise between green repositories and subscription publishing to the optimistic view of repositories as a liberating force for universities, reflect the tensions and complexity of the scholarly publishing landscape. Some authors also debated the particular strengths of the different types of repositories; subject repositories which enable a disciplinary network versus institutional repositories that provide a wide range of outputs. Others called for national repositories, arguing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Our guest editors have carefully selected a range of articles that not only examine the role of repositories but also offer useful insights into how to implement repository strategies effectively and how they can potentially shape the future of scholarly communication. Our authors have written on a range of topics, including interoperability, standards, and measuring societal impact through metrics such as social media and Wikipedia citations.

We believe repositories will continue to evolve, innovate and provide value to the scholarly community, and we are excited to publish these new developments in Insights.
